Hurricane Song

Paul Volponi
Description
"Hurricane Song" by Paul Volponi is a very powerful novel about Hurricane Katrina and how one family survived not only Katrina but their stay in the Superdome. Miles has only lived in New Orleans for two months when Hurricane Katrina hits. After his mother marries a man with lots of kids, Miles feels he has no choice but to move in with his father. Miles only knows his father from sporadic visits during school vacations. In addition, Miles believes they have very little in common. Miles is a football fanatic and his jazz-musician father seems to have very little interest in sports. The two struggle to communicate because they both feel misunderstood. As Miles is contemplating moving back with his mother in Chicago, Hurricane Katrina hits. Miles, his father, and uncle try to leave town but find they left two late. The only place for them to go is the Superdome. Things start to deteriorate quickly in the Superdome as there is not enough food, water, or medical assistance for the amount of people being housed, but the most important issue becomes security. Gangs of thugs try to take advantage of the situation and create more chaos. Volponi describes the situation very realistically. One can feel the desperation of the people, but what also shines through is their perseverance and strength of character. As Miles and his father try to survive their stay in the Superdome, they come to appreciate their differences and find some common ground.
