"The Patron Saint of Butterflies" by Cecilia Galante is an intriguing story about friendship, finding one's voice, and the power of love. The timing for this book is great in light of the recent news about fundamental religious cults. Honey and Agnes have been friends since the crib. They live in a commune outside of Fairfield, Connecticut called Mount Blessing. Their lives are regulated with stringent rules. Agnes and Honey start to feel different about their lives and each other. Agnes life purpose to strive for perfection through faith and wants to be saint; however, Honey wants to get as far from Mount Blessing as possible. An unexpected visit from Agnes' grandmother Nana Pete, changes everything as Nana Pete learns that abuse against the children and adults has occurred on several occasions. Nana Pete decides to leave with the girls. During their journey, Honey is excited to begin living a normal life, but Agnes agonizes over the decision and tries to hang-on to the life she had. This begins to test their life-long friendship, especially after they learn an even bigger secret about each other and their life at Mount Blessing.
