Shooting Kabul
Description
In Afghanistan, the Taliban has come into power and they have approached Fadi's well-educated father to join them or else. Instead of assisting the Taliban, they decide to flee to America to escape persecution. As the family approaches the truck that will transport them to safety, the Taliban are sighted around the corner, causing panic and confusion. Told to watch his sister, Fadi loses the grip of his six-year old sister's hand as they are getting in the truck, leaving her behind and alone in Afghanistan. Now, Fadi knows he has to find his little sister and will do anything to do so. Learning of a photography contest where the first prize is a trip to India, he decides he HAS to win so he can get to India, which is close to Pakistan which is close to Afghanistan. But does he succeed? Does his sister ever get found? Can he ever forgive himself for letting go of her hand?
This story echoes that of many refugee immigrants in this country and is based on a similar story of the author's father-in-law. The emotion felt for all family members is incredible and you will find yourself cheering for Fadi as the book progresses.
