Everyone mourns the death of a loved one differently. Some get angry, some depressed, some turn to other vices, and some turn to religion. After his brother dies, David gets very angry until he meets Bailey. She helps him work through his anger and become happier. David’s parents turn to religion for comfort but soon they fall sway to a cult like leader who tells them to prepare for the “Rush” aka the end of the world. David thinks this is all baloney until he comes home late from prom to find his parents have vanished. Have his parents gone to heaven? If so, what about his soul? What does he do now? This Side of Salvation is a fantastic read that explores grief, faith and fanaticism. It a thoughtful yet witty read.
