Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty

G. Neri
Description
In 1994, an 11 year old boy, called Yummy, shot and killed an innocent 14 year old girl, Shevon. He was trying to kill a rival gang member and the girl got in the way. He was featured on the cover of Time magazine with the headline "So young to kill, so young to die." The story is told through the eyes of a fictional boy from the neighborhood that depicts Yummy as killer and victim. His father is in jail, his mother is a drug addict that abused him, and his overwhelmed grandmother was unable to give him a proper home. Yummy turns to the only people that show him any interest: The Black Disciples Nation (BDN). The BDN uses Yummy to commit crimes for them. After Yummy shots Shevon, the gang tries to hide him but police pressure turns them against Yummy. The BDN will eventually murder Yummy. Was Yummy a killer or a victim, too?
