Growing up in the Appalachian mountain of West Virginian in 1953, Lydia's life was rich in love. She lived with her Mama, Gran and brother BJ. Although her brother has cystic fibrosis, Lydia's tight-knit, financially strapped family tries hard to keep him happy and healthy. Her life falls apart after her brother and Gran die and her Mama is jailed for a crime she did not commit. Lydia is sent to live in town with her uncle and aunt. The kids at her new school make fun of her speech and handmade clothes. She also learns her uncle might be keeping a family secret that will could destroy her whole life. Lydia has never felt so alone. But there might be some hope for Lydia when one teacher sees beyond the old clothes and sees a spark in Lydia. Will he be able to help her see how special she really is?
