At the age of four, Cece got meningitis leaving her with hearing loss. TV, music, people and school were hard to understand. When people discovered her hearing aids, some would talk really slow, some people would shout and some called her special – a word she hated. Very few people understood young Cece with her “phonic ear” strapped to her body. So she imagines herself as a superhero with superpowers named, “El Deafo.” who has no problems expressing exactly what she is feeling.
