After her babushka dies, a young Patricia Polacco and her family move to California. She has no friends and longs for her grandmother. In Oakland, she becomes friends with a boy named Stewart. Stewart welcomes her into the neighborhood and his grandmother Miss Eula Mae Walker welcomes her into the family.
