Rafe Khatchadorian hates middle school! He arrives on the first day of school and is forced to attend a pep rally in which the principal begins to read, word for word, the Hills Village Middle School Code of Conduct. Rafe can't believe it. "Middle school had just started, and they were already trying to bore him to death." He and his friend Leo decide at that moment to break every rule in the Code of Conduct. It becomes a game in which Rafe can earn points for every rule broken; however, will soon learn that rule breaking comes with consequences. Will he continue to break the rules? Or will he be expelled? Or worse, will he have to repeat the 6th grade?
