The Mockingbirds

Daisy Whitney
Description
Themis Academy is a private high school where everyone is smart, athletic and talented. It is a school of future leaders. This is what the administrators and faculty think and they find it impossible to believe that their student's are capable of hurting each other or committing crimes. It is for that reason Alex Patrick feels she has no recourse when she wakes up naked in a strange dorm room and remembering very little of the night before; however, she does realize she has been date-raped by water polo, all-around popular Carter. She tries to forget and move on but she is finding it hard to do, especially when she sees Carter everywhere. With encouragement from her sister and best friend, Alex turns to the Mockingbirds for help. The Mockingbirds is a hush-hush school organization of students that help right the wrongs committed by students. During the ensuing investigation and trial, Alex continues to deal with her emotions over the rape and finds the courage to stand up for herself and other girls. Wonderfully well-written, it is a must read for teens. NPR Top YA Book, 2010
