Sharon M. Draper
Description
Trapped inside a body that drools and convulses with cerebral palsy Melody watches and learns at an incredible rate, but is unable to speak or communicate her thoughts. Her body simply won't allow it. Everyone thinks that she is mentally retarded because she can't communicate, gesture, or point. Her parents feed, bath, and cloth her. Only her mother and Mrs. Valencia the next door neighbor see the bright child locked inside a defective body. When at age 11 Melody is given a Medi-Talker, and her world changes with her new found ability to speak. Classmates suddenly realize that she may be one of the brightest in her grade, but it doesn't change the fact that she is different. Can they except the new Melody?
