The Radleys

Matt Haig
Description
Of all the vampire books out there and there are a lot, "The Radleys" is the most entertaining and well-written. Peter, Helen, Rowan, and Clara Radley look like the average family next door. They are suffering through many of the same problems as other families. Peter is an overworked and unsatisfied doctor in their suburban town. He and Helen are growing more and more estranged. Son Rowan is friendless and bullied mercilessly. Sister Clara is enduring her own teen angst. Yes, your typical family except this is a family of vampires. The parents have not told their children what they are because they want them to fit into human society. The effect of denying their true nature is devastating to the whole family, especially the kids. They suffer from nausea, weakness, and insomnia just to name a few. When a brute from school tries to take advantage of Clara, it forces her to do something violent but also gratifying. This single action leads to turmoil in the Radley home as family secrets and suppressed emotions bubble to the surface. A thrilling, hard-to-put-down read about the consequences of denying our true selves, parental love, and the family love that binds us together.
