11 year old Kara was left by a dumpster to die as a newborn in China. It could be because she is simply a girl or it could be that one of her hands has only two nubs instead of five fingers. She was found by an American woman whose husband was teaching English at the time. Too afraid to leave for America without her charge, the woman lives in secret with Kara, raising her in American ways, living on rice and cabbage. When Kara's American sister Jody arrives for a visit, she is appalled with her loudness and excess spending. One meal she orders is enough for Kara and her mama to live on for an entire month!
