"The Trouble with Dragons" is an absolutely stunning story that is at once a fantastic rhyming ode to dragons and a warning to the hazards of being environmentally careless. Thoughtless, ecologically wasteful dragons are taking up all the space, food, and drink in the world. The world is getting so hot that "everything's covered in water or sand." The animals give the dragons some stern advice: Leave trees alone, eat locally grown foods, walk more, and recycle. In addition, the artwork is fun and expressive. A picture of Santa, pants rolled up as he wades into water that used to be a glacier, gifts floating in the water nearby, is a great place to start a discussion with students about the effect of global warming. This is a timely story that will emphasize the importance of being ecologically conscious that is a fun read-aloud.
