Carole Boston Weatherford
Description
Fannie Lou Hamer grew up dirt poor on the Mississippi Delta. She had 19 older brothers and sisters and they all worked hard picking cotton from sun up to sun down just to put food on the table. And they never were able to get ahead of the poverty. She knew from a yo9ung age that life was not fair for black people and that whites had the advantages. One day she attends a voter registration meeting and raises her hand to volunteer to get people to register and vote. Fannie’s life was never the same. She participated in sit-ins, marches, and voter meetings. For her hard work, Fannie suffered beatings from police and even went to jail. But she never gave up the cause. Fannie Lou Hamer is an inspiration to all Americans. Voice of Freedom is her story and should be read by all students.
